Wrench Design System

Since 2018 I've been the lead contributor to the SurveyMonkey design system, referred to as Wrench. At SurveyMonkey, I've been the company “go to” when it comes to offering consultation to designers and front-end engineers on usage of the design system. I've worked on many projects closely with design and product partners, helping inform both the product requirements and design strategy by creating early prototypes and provide direction on design system usage, interaction design, animation, responsive design and accessibility.

The homepage

I maintain an interesting landing page for the design system. First impressions are important!

Chat bubble component

We noticed there were multiple different AI related chat interfaces being built across the company. I helped unify the requirements for each and built a chat bubble component complete with loading and typing animations.

Illustrations

I implemented a fresh set of customizable SVG illustrations into the design system. I created a simple yet useful search and filtering interface that allows both designers and engineers to browse our illustrations library. It could offer a preview of every combonation of customizable props available for each illustration on one page.

Date picker component

I found that there were many different date pickers being used across the product, some custom built, some using different third party libraries, all looking very different. I helped bring consistency to the product by unfiying these into a single shared date picker component that I themed and built into the design system.

Notification animation

I often used our design system to inject delightful animations into our product, like this one to alert the user of a new notification.

Dashboard prototype

I became the "prototype guy" at the company, often getting involved in the design process very early on during ideation to help explore design ideas in the browser. This was a huge help in assisting designers with things like: interaction design, animation, design system usage, accessibility and responsive design. Here's a fun example of a feature landing page I built to help the team explore some fresh ideas.

Design guidelines

I was a contributor to the design docs site and published some well researched design guidelines. Like this one, helping designers decide which type of selection component they should choose based on the details of their use case.

2025 year in review

I designed this dashboard for a company offsite "science fair" booth. I came up with the idea to track every instance of a component used across the org, and multiply that by estimated time saved for each component, then came up with a loose estimate of time and money saved across the engineering org by using the design system.
